CBD drinks – the facts

by | Aug 2, 2023 | 0 comments

Why buy canned CBD drinks when you can make your own? There are several benefits of making your own CBD drink – you can save money, save on waste, but not scrimp on quality. What are you waiting for!?

Not all CBD drinks are the same

Save on money: On average, canned or bottled CBD drinks in the UK cost £2.50. 1 dose of our full spectrum CBD shots is 72 pence. It’s worth understanding that the quality of CBD is important so you know what you’re paying for, but in short 6mg Full Spectrum CBD is the equivalent of 12mg of CBD isolate (which is what you will find in all the popular CBD drinks on the market.

Save on waste: It’s great that cans can be recycled and that plastic bottles are more often made from recycled plastic; but plastic has a short recycle life and at some point soon still ends up in landfill. And the process of recycling cans uses a lot of energy. So if you can add your CBD to your glass of water, reusable coffee cup, sports bottle, smoothie, gin and tonic even, then think how much waste you’ll be saving on creating!

Quality – know what you’re paying for: There’s a 3 tier quality of CBD; full spectrum CBD (best quality), broad spectrum CBD (mid quality) and CBD Isolate (also known as ‘pure’ or ‘narrow spectrum’). All are effective, of course, but as with most things, the better the quality, the less you will need to take to get the same effects.

All CBD drinks I have seen on the UK market contain CBD Isolate – this is because it mixes well with liquid, is absorbed by the body more easily than a regular CBD oil, and is very cheap so brands can maximise profit.  Regular CBD Oil ideally should not be mixed with liquids as the absorption rate is diminished massively – 4% to 25% absorption rate in fact – which is why the *sublingual method is recommended (*dropped beneath the tongue to be absorbed directly into the bloodstream).

The Tonic’s Full Spectrum Water-soluble CBD, or CBD Shots as we now call it, is totally unique and the only full spectrum CBD designed to be ingested so you can add it to any drink or food while it retains its 100% absorption rate! Because of the full spectrum quality, a 6mg dose of our 4% Water-soluble CBD is equivalent to 12 to 18mg of CBD isolate, which is what you will find in all CBD waters on the UK market.

So why drink CBD at all? Well, it’s convenient and avoids the strong taste of CBD that you get with regular CBD oils. It also allows you to ‘microdose’ your CBD, i.e. get it into your system in small increments over time. Adding a drop or two to your water bottle that sits on your desk, or that you take to the gym, means you experience the benefits of a constant trickle of CBD, which can make for a very efficient endocannabinoid system.

Cheers to CBD!

SOME COMMON QUESTIONS ANSWERED…

CBD SOLUBILITY IN WATER
If you mix CBD oil in water you will see it separates like oil and water usually does. It’s because oil molecules are so much larger than water molecules and so can’t penetrate through our digestive membrane very easily. Traditional CBD oil extracted from the cannabis plant is what’s known as a lipophilic fat. As it’s very hard for our bodies to process it is recommended to take CBD oil sublingually. This means placing the oil under your tongue and holding it there for a minute or 2. The sublingual membrane allows the oil to pass through and into the blood stream. CBD is absorbed at a rate of 50% to 80% this way. If you were to swallow traditional CBD oil directly or take in food or drink, the absorption rate is drastically reduced to around 4% to 20%.
However, we have created a ‘water soluble’ version of full spectrum CBD – unlike a lot of other water soluble CBD on the market (often isolate CBD), ours remains the highest quality full spectrum, yet has almost 100% absorption rate!
With our Full Spectrum Water Soluble CBD you can add it to food or drink or just swallow it down – no matter how you take it you always absorb the maximum CBD content. Learn more on how to take CBD.
WHAT IS WATER SOLUBLE CBD?
As oils don’t mix with water, measures have been taken in the CBD industry to create formulas derived from CBD Oil which can be mixed with water. There are 2 types of water soluble CBD:
1: CBD Isolate – the 1 cannabinoid, cannabidiol, extracted from all the other essential compounds and dehydrated to form a white power which can then be mixed with drinks. This can be natural or synthetic.
2: Water Soluble Full Spectrum CBD – this is the product we prefer as it retains all the essential cannabinoids and compounds from the plant to create the entourage effect. It’s almost 100% water soluble. It’s made through a lengthy process of reducing the oil compound size and binding these to a vegetable glycerin to increase the capacity to travel through the digestive membrane and into the blood stream.

DOES WATER SOLUBLE CBD WORK?
If you choose a high quality water soluble CBD then the benefits can be even greater than regular CBD oil as your body is able to absorb more of the essential cannabinoids. You can read our customers testimonials in our TrustPilot page.

FULL SPECTRUM WATER SOLUBLE CBD
Full spectrum water soluble CBD is a rare thing to find as it takes a lengthy and expert process to make, but we can guarantee that our 8% and 4% Water Soluble CBD products are truly that!
HOW TO TAKE WATER SOLUBLE CBD
Water soluble CBD is much easier to take than traditional CBD oil as you can add it to food or drink or just swallow without holding it under you tongue, and it retains it’s 100% absorption rate no matter how you take it!
WATER SOLUBLE CBD FOR DOGS
As people grow more and more aware how beneficial CBD is for dogs, it’s good to understand the best methods of administration. If you do intend to give CBD to your dog, we would strongly advise you tell your vet first and consider the dosage as well as the method of application. Firstly, dogs are smaller than humans so dosage will be much less. Secondly, regular CBD oil if added to dog food will not be well absorbed – around 5% to 20% of CBD is absorbed when ingested, which is why as humans we take CBD oil sublingually (under the tongue) as it increases the absorption rate up to 80%. Some people apply the regular oil to the skin where there is little hair, like underside of the ear. But you also have the option of using Water Soluble CBD which is designed to be ingested so the absorption rate is 100%. So take both these types of CBD and their absorption rate into consideration when working out dosage.

WATER SOLUBLE CBD DRINK RECIPE
We absolutely LOVE adding water soluble CBD to a smoothie. Here’s our favourite:
TROPICAL CBD SMOOTHIE
Fresh Ginger – 1 inch square
1 large orange
1/2 mango
3 or 4 1 inch cubes of pineapple
1 banana
Juice of 1 lemon
Water to get the consistency you want
1 or 2 sprays of our 4% Water Soluble CBD

WATER SOLUBLE CBD TINCTURE
Unlike traditional tinctures, we never use alcohol as a carrying solution for our CBD. We do not use alcohol as a method extraction like some brands. We use the most clean method of extraction, the C02 method – high pressures and low temperatures. Our water soluble CBD comes in 2 concentrations – 4% 400mg of CBD for every 10ml bottle and 8% 800mg of CBD for every 10ml size. The 4% comes with a spray top, the 8% comes in a plunge pen as it’s much thicker than the 4% and so won’t come out of a spray or pipet.

WATER SOLUBLE CBD UNDER THE TONGUE
You do not need to hold water soluble CBD beneath your tongue as you do with traditional CBD oils. It’s designed to be ingested so you can add it to food and drink without compromising the high absorption rate.

WATER SOLUBLE CBD VS OIL
Our Water Soluble CBD is specially designed to be ingested so can be sprayed directly in the mouth and swallowed immediately or added to drink or food. It depends on what is easier for you. Because of the way the water soluble CBD is absorbed, the effects can be up to 10x more effective than the oil equivalent because your body is able to absorb almost 100% of the cannabinoids into your system. This is because the oil compounds have been reduced using a special technique, so they are small enough for the body to process through ingestion as it would any other food stuff that isn’t an oil.
CBD oil is taken differently, placing drops or spraying beneath the tongue is known as taking the oil sublingually. The advantage to taking the oil in this manner is that it allows the most vital components to be directly absorbed into the bloodstream and to your CB2 receptors without having to pass first through the digestive system.

WHAT IS WATER SOLUBLE CBD USED FOR
Water soluble CBD is used for all the same benefits as CBD oil, it’s just much easier to take and has an increased absorption rate.
Our water soluble CBD also has extra anti inflammatory terpenes added from the cannabis plant so is particularly effective for arthritis, colitis, and other inflammation related issues.
