CBD and sleep

There are several reasons why people struggle with their sleep – raised cortisol levels and anxiety/stress being the most common, with hormone imbalance being the second. Luckily CBD is renowned for;

  • calming the nervous system to reduce stress
  • regulating our natural sleep pattern via the Hypothalamus in our brains
  • balancing hormone secretion

But it can also have mild sedative effects if taken in high doses. There is a lot more research being done into the effects of CBD on sleep. One recent study found that 160mg of CBD increased sleep duration when testing against lower levels of CBD, a placebo and nitrazepam. That’s a whopping amount for testing purposes, compared to what is effective in real life – usually 24mg to 50mg is plenty for most people to notice the benefits on their sleep.

CBD has been proven to regulate our sleep pattern as well as modulate cortisol levels and reducing stress, all of which lead to a great nights sleep

Our CBD Tea is a favourite with those wanting a bedtime cuppa that really does help settle you into sleep and keep you there. And our oral CBD oils and CBD patches are effective alternatives. So is CBD right for you? Let’s first look at which sleep pattern sounds like you…

  1. Fast to sleep, but wake often
  2. Struggle getting to sleep
  3. Cannot get to sleep/insomnia
  4.

If you’re number one and have a night of interruption, I would recommend any of our oral CBD products, especially the CBD Shots. Take a dose at bedtime and as soon as you wake in the night, take another to help get you back off to sleep.

CBD tea is the perfect bedtime drink to encourage sleep

If you relate to number 2, here’s what we recommend…make a cup of Good Night CBD tea early on in the evening. This will start to calm the nervous system and relax you ready for bed. Once in bed take a dose of oral CBD, around 12mg to 36mg, so you get a high amount into your bloodstream fast. This is to ensure cortisol levels are controlled so your sleep pattern can be regulated and a deeper, better quality of sleep can ensue. The 8% CBD Shots, 8% Classic CBD Oil or the CBD capsules are all great to take at bedtime. If the dawn chorus has you awake at 3 or 4am, take another dose to quickly lower the cortisol levels that peak to wake you in the morning.

If you relate to the third point and struggle to get to sleep at all or suffer from insomnia, it could be that you have high cortisol levels at night, which can be caused by high stress levels. Taking a high amount orally is what we’d recommend. Start during the afternoon or early evening – don’t leave it until bedtime – with 24mg – 48mg of CBD taken orally. Have your endocannabinoid system flooded with CBD so everything is balanced before you’re even thinking about going to bed. Then keep your CBD at your bedside to take dose when you wake or to keep your mind more still if you find yourself lying there worrying in the early hours. Taken regularly, CBD can help regulate your sleep pattern.

But will this be strong enough to keep you there? For some people yes, but for others who have chronic insomnia, you maybe best taking one of our high strength oral oils to get a larger milligram dose into your system at bedtime to ensure it lasts the night. We’d recommend a larger dose at bedtime, until your sleep pattern is stable, then you can begin to reduce down. This study proves higher CBD doses reduces cortisol levels. And take more if you wake. This sounds excessive, but for some people this is what it takes to get out of the disrupted sleep pattern that will have occurred over a long period of insomnia.

We wish you all improved sleep and don’t forget, if you have any questions don’t hesitate to get in touch via our email.

SOME COMMON QUESTIONS ANSWERED…

WHICH CBD IS BEST FOR SLEEP?

All our Oral CBD Oils are great for calming the nervous system, which in turn, stills a busy mind and relaxes the body. And the ones we’ve curated here are all excellent. If you like to have a bedtime cuppa, you have the choice of adding a drop or 2 of our water soluble CBD to boost its sleep-powers, or treating yourself to a cup of our CBD tea. And don’t underestimate the efficacy of a CBD bath at bedtime to ease you into a deep slumber.

HOW CAN CBD HELP WITH SLEEP?

If you struggle to get to sleep at all, it could be that you have high cortisol levels at night, which can be caused by high stress levels. This study proves CBD reduces cortisol levels. If you wake in the night, as many people do, you may need another dose of oral CBD to help get you back off to sleep quicker. CBD helps regulate your natural sleep pattern by communicating with the CBD1 receptors in your brain (the control centre for regulating sleep, mood, appetite, temperature and much more)

WHAT CBD DOSAGE DO I NEED FOR SLEEP?

Some people need a little and some people, say those with chronic insomnia, may need more. So a cup of CBD tea will be sufficient for some and a 36mg dose of the 25% CBD oil may be what others require. As always, start with a low dose and work up from there if you need to.
