THE TONIC’S RESPONSE TO THE FSA’S NEW CBD ADI (Acceptable Daily Intake) CBD GUIDELINES

At The Tonic, our customers come first, and we want to reassure you that we will only ever produce the highest quality, most natural form, of full spectrum CBD available and advise on the safest and most effective method of consumption and dosage. We want to make you aware of the recent changes in precautionary acceptable daily intake (ADI) of CBD by the FSA (Food Standards Agency). The ADI of CBD has been reduced from 70mg a day to 10mg.

The reason for this change follows clinical trials with Pure CBD Isolate of ≥98% (Cannabidiol). Pure CBD Isolate is just one of the many cannabinoids available in the hemp plant and is created synthetically or by isolating it from all the other cannabinoids and beneficial compounds of full spectrum oil. The precautionary advice from the FSA is based on a high intake of Pure CBD  ≥98% Cannabidiol over a lifetime of daily use. The research has not been made available as yet so we cannot reveal the exact details of the research and as far as we are aware, tests have only been animal experiments on mice, giving extremely high doses over intense periods of time, and so do not reflect the long term effect of reasonable dosage in adult humans.  From the tests from which we think they derived this decision, they have taken a level of mg per kg weight where no observed adverse effects were reported and divided by 300, consequently providing an acceptable exposure to CBD now set at 300 times lower than the level at which there are ‘No Observed Adverse Effect Levels’ according to the data we have read.

The FSA’s statement on its decision is: “There is no acute safety risk with consuming more than 10mg of CBD a day, based on the data we have assessed to date. However, above this level and over a period of time, there is evidence of some adverse impacts on the liver and thyroid. The higher the dose that is consumed and the more often higher doses are consumed will increase the risks of experiencing an adverse health effect.”

We are proud to state that The Tonic’s products are made from all-natural, full spectrum CBD oil extracted from the hemp plant and not pure CBD Isolate (which is the form of CBD used for these clinical trials). This means that in every dose of our oral CBD, the CBD content will be a mix of cannabinoid compounds such as cannabigerol (CBG), cannabidiolic acid (CBDA), Cannabichromene (CBC) and not just cannabidiol (CBD). Most products in our oral and ingestible range provide a single dose under 10mg of CBD, making it easy for you to work within these new guidelines. We have listed these below. Please note, the ADI does NOT apply to topical or cosmetic forms of CBD including our CBD Patches, Moisturiser, Serum, Lip Balm, Clit Spritz and Massage Oils.

We await clarification from the FSA on how to apply their decision to full spectrum products and how to communicate this on the labelling and dosage advice.

The Tonic products with < 10mg CBD per dose:

CBD Infused Luxury Tea – 5mg full spectrum water soluble CBD per cup

4% Water Soluble Full Spectrum CBD – 6mg full spectrum CBD per spray

3% CBG Enhanced CBD – 3mg full spectrum CBD per spray (plus 3mg CBG per spray)

Products currently > 10mg daily dosage

8% Classic CBD Oil (regular or mint) – 12mg full spectrum CBD per spray

25% Classic CBD Oil – 12mg full spectrum CBD per drop

8% Water Soluble Full Spectrum CBD – 20mg full spectrum CBD per pump

With time, we can adjust the dispensers of these 3 products to allow for a smaller, individual dose. For example, change the current spray to a pipet on the 8% Classic CBD oil. This is to change the dose from 0.15ml to 0.05ml, reducing 12mg per spray to 4mg per drop.

If you have any questions at all about CBD and dosage, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. We are here to help.
