If you’re here reading about CBD & parenting, chances are you’re a parent. And, assuming that’s the case, we’ll also assume that you already know how deeply challenging being a parent can be on every level.
Early years exhaustion? Check. Three-teen tantrums? Check. Endless demands for your time/energy/money/food at every age? Definitely. These (and much more besides) are things that all parents deal with. And even though there’s a lot about being a parent that is of course a wonderful, magical journey, there’s no shame in admitting that some days (most days?) you’re just completely wrung out.
So, what are you supposed to do when this happens? In an ideal world, you’d take a well-earned break. Maybe a short nap too and indulge in a good cry and expert-level comfort eating. But when that’s not possible (let’s face it, that’s probably not possible) you need a little helping hand. And, although not quite the same as a babysitter and a weekend off, CBD can be that for you.
Parenthood = Endocannabinoid Deficiency
There are many things that mums and dads have in common when it comes to parenthood, but one that’s hardly ever talked about is the fact that we’re probably all endocannabinoid deficient.
When stress, sleep deprivation, poor diet and lack of down time and exercise takes its toll, you can see the side effects in more ways than eye-bags and mum/dad tums. These are all big contributors to the body slowing way down on endocannabinoid Anandamide and 2-AG release and presence, as well as problems spanning pretty much every aspect of your health and wellbeing. (On a quick side note, for those who have practiced Yoga, Anandamide is named after the Sanscrit word for bliss, ‘ananda. Nice huh?) After all, your endocannabinoid system (the network which both endocannabinoids and cannabinoids, like CBD, interact with) is everywhere, from almost every skin cell to deep within your internal organs, immune system, nervous system, brain and more. Because of this, it’s involved with nearly every bodily process and if it’s knocked off-kilter, these processes can start throwing up real issues from anxiety to insomnia to all varieties of aches and pains.
On top of your own discomfort, having this ongoing strain on your wellbeing can make parenting the way you want to parent extra tough. We all want to be loving and patient with our kids and feel that we are able to be present with them as much as possible. Despite the hardship, we know that time spent with our children is precious and seems to whizz by at an impossible speed. So, if you’ve found yourself feeling like a ‘bad father’ for struggling to hold it together when faced with the 25th screaming tantrum of the day, or an ‘absent mother’ for stressing out and prioritising your work-load over play time, first of all – don’t. Give yourself a break, as you would with anyone else you met taking on the world like you do. And give yourself a chance to regain your balance holistically and long-term with the nurturing input of nature.
Go for Full Spectrum CBD
Making CBD part of your daily life has the potential to take all those moments that just felt like too much to bear, and turn them into ‘just a thing’. But CBD is not the only cannabinoid you should be looking for when searching for a CBD product to aid both physical and mental needs.
In areas of the world where medical marijuana is legally prescribed (for reasons other than special cases of MS, like in the UK), many people find that using cannabis with a higher THC content can be very helpful for those suffering from postnatal depression or postnatal anxiety. This is because THC (the psychoactive component that gets you stoned) is the cannabinoid which has the biggest impact on mood and perception, thanks to its interaction with CB1 receptors which are mostly found in the brain. However, despite the fact that CBD attaches itself to CB2 receptors which are far broader (found in the immune system, bones, the skin and peripheral organs such as the eyes, ears, kidneys, liver and pancreas), this famous cannabinoid and over 120 other cannabinoids besides all do their bit to help the body return to a state of homeostasis. Whether that’s through low levels of Anandamide being restored, or by triggering your body into regulating other chemicals and hormones, such as the very common imbalance in estrogen and progesterone many new mothers experience. This (alongside the additional terpenes and flavanols) is called the entourage effect, which happens when all parts of the plant work together in synergy as, when and where they are needed.
Fortunately, you’ll find everything you need in The Tonic’s full-spectrum CBD products as we always use supercritical CO2 extraction to pack the full array of cannabinoids (below-legal levels of THC included) into our high quality oil. This won’t get you high at all, but it will get you back on track in moments of acute stress and, if taken regularly, give your body what it needs to realign, even without a moment’s peace. And, just as a side note, we totally won’t judge if you squirt a bit on your kid’s cereal too to make them chill the f**k out for five minutes!
